Finally, here's what the house looked like from outside. It was bathed in golden California afternoon sunlight, on a cloudless summer's day, just inviting us to take it. Another plus, or so we thought at the time, was that the "lawn" was all lava rock, no grass, no mowing, no weeding, and unique, because we'd never seen one on the east coast. As it turns out, during rainy season ("winter" on the east coast), there's enough water that weeding does become a requirement. Still, it sure beats having to mow a lawn.
